Gum disease treatment

Healthy gums are the foundation of a healthy smile. Bleeding, swelling, bad breath, gum recession or loose teeth are not something to accept as normal — they are often signs of gingivitis or periodontitis. Periodontology at SVEDENT in Sofia is led by our co-founder Dr. Denitza Kafelova.

What does periodontal care include?

Depending on your diagnosis, treatment can include:

  • diagnosis of the gums, bone and risk factors
  • removal of tartar and subgingival deposits
  • treatment of gingivitis and periodontitis
  • periodontal maintenance and prevention
  • “pink” aesthetic solutions in appropriate cases

Treatment that continues after the appointment

Periodontology works as a partnership between dentist and patient. You receive individual guidance for home care and a personal schedule of maintenance visits — because with gum disease, consistency is what keeps the result stable.

When the gums are healthy, every other treatment becomes more predictable, the smile looks more harmonious and the teeth have a better long-term prognosis.

Frequently asked questions

Are bleeding gums normal?

No. Bleeding when brushing is usually the earliest sign of gum inflammation (gingivitis). Caught early, it is fully reversible with professional cleaning and better home care.

Can periodontitis be cured?

Periodontitis can be stopped and stabilised with systematic treatment and regular maintenance. The bone that has been lost does not grow back by itself, which is why early diagnosis matters so much.

Is deep cleaning painful?

Routine cleanings are comfortable for most patients. Deeper subgingival cleaning can be done under local anaesthesia, so the procedure stays calm and pain-free.

How often do I need periodontal maintenance?

Typically every 3–6 months, depending on your individual risk. We set the interval together after the initial treatment phase.
